Interview with Frank Ball, Author of Eyewitness

Eyewitness - The Life of Christ Told in One Story offers a unique perspective about the life of Christ. Because the author has taken years to painstakingly compile and compare the four gospels to create one single storyline, Jesus' life unfolds in a new and intriquing way!

As a Christian storyteller, I'm going to use this book as a resource for developing some of my characters. As a Christian writer and speaker, this book serves as a remarkable reference!

Please take the time to read the interview with the author, Frank Ball:

1. The gospel stories have existed for some two thousand years. Why put them chronologically together now?

Nine out of ten Americans own a Bible, but the people who most need to hear the message don’t often read the book. They believe Scripture is outdated and too difficult to understand. Would they read the story of Christ if it were presented as a single story that is easy to understand? Most of them say they would, so Eyewitness answers that need.

2. Why do the Gospels appear to have conflicting stories?

At a crime scene, eyewitnesses always have different testimonies about what happened. Because each gospel writer had his own point of view and spoke to a different audience, the information is actually complementary, not conflicting. The apparent conflicts disappear when we use each viewpoint to compile a complete and compelling story.

3. How was writing and recording events different two thousand years ago?

We now use a computer keyboard to rapidly type and edit text that prints on our laser printers. In the first century, writers had only their parchment scrolls in which every word was hand written, one character at a time. Cut-and-paste editing and simple rearrangement of details into chronological order didn’t exist. Writers naturally put down information as it came to mind, giving us a flow of thought that isn’t always in date sequence.

4. What is the significance of John’s gospel being the last one written?

If John were to introduce his book to us today, he might say, “Let me tell you the rest of the story.” There wasn’t much need to repeat what had already been written, so he gives us clarification of events that were already being told and retold, as well as eyewitness reports that are found nowhere else. Unlike the other writers, who were not always chronological, John unfolds most of his story in date sequence in relation to the Jewish feasts. This gives us a chronological guide for putting all the biblical information in order.

5. In what way do you think the readers of Eyewitness will have a clearer understanding of the nature of God?

Jesus said, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” If we can see what Jesus is doing and hear what he is saying, we become eyewitness of God’s nature. Because the words in Eyewitness are more like what we would read in a novel, readers are able to visualize themselves as present at the gospel events. It’s the next best thing to actually being there, walking with the other disciples.

6. How many different Bible translations were necessary to complete this project?

Hundreds of scholars have invested countless hours in the production of good translations. In the development of an easy-to-read wording for Eyewitness, translators’ handbooks and more than fifteen popular translations, as well as the Greek and Hebrew texts, were considered.

7. Is the Bible flawed in presenting the life of Christ in four separate books?

No, not at all. Each author’s report has its own perspective and meets a different audience need. Matthew points to the fulfillment of ancient prophecies to prove Jesus was the Son of God. Mark, the shortest of the Gospels, is the quickest to read. Luke, being a physician, gives many important details. And John adds clarity, chronology, and new information. Eyewitness was written for those who don’t read the Bible and for people who are helped by seeing how the story unfolded, chronologically.

8. Why do you think Eyewitness appeals to people who seldom attend church?

Even professed atheists and agnostics have questions about the meaning of life and what happens after we die. Eyewitness isn’t a book of difficult-to-understand rules that threatens punishment if we don’t do everything exactly right. The life of Christ is presented in a way so people can easily understand the value of loving our enemies and helping people in need.

Where I Am From

I am from newspaper women
and farmer's wives
spines of steel;
wisdom beyond imagining
no dreams of fame and fortune.
Just ordinary lives.

I am from hard work and ancient wounds
never forgotten nor spoken of
nor exposed to light of day;
survival of the fittest;
overcoming struggle.
Manifesting deep love.

I am from the ocean and the sand;
eternal horizon expanding;
waves crash and roar;
undertow pulls and releases shells and
skeletons from the deep.
A million grains of understanding.

I am from ancient earth mothers;
sisters of magic and mystery
creators of hope and beauty,
vessels of future dreams
dutifully bearing children.
Changing the course of history.

I am from spirit and flesh and bone;

Woo Hoo! I just received an e-mail from Helium.com that one of my articles has been sold to a publisher looking for articles about "parenting in the new millennium!" It's not a huge amount of cash, but completely unexpected!

The quickest way to irritate another writer is to speak
in absolutes.

Never use passive voice.
Never begin a sentence with AND.
Never self-publish.
Write EVERY day.
ONLY pitch to New York agents.
Don't sell all rights.
Never accept a work-for-hire gig.
Never pay an entry fee for a contest.

If you want a serious dose of absolutes, attend an
online writer's group, visit a writer's chatroom, read
blog comments. Sooner or later someone will say, "Thou
shalt not..." then rattle off an absolute.

Writing is an artistic endeavor, and throwing absolutes
in the way cramps that creativity. Sure there are a few
common sense rules like not harassing an editor daily
or not writing a query letter on stationery that smells
like gardenias. But for the most part, it's our creativity
that drives us and drives those who need our work.

On the home front: My mother-in-law, Audrey, is showing some small signs of improvement, but her doctor has told us to have her follow up with him in 3 months. That seems like such a long time when everything she has known in her life is like a missing link. Thankfully she knows all of us and seems to enjoy some of the activities at the skilled nursing facility that is her temporary residence.

We continue to pray for 100% healing. We also continue to need prayers on behalf of Audrey's family, especially my husband and sister-in-law who are basically scheduling their lives around their Mom and her needs. My husband has been bearing the burden of "looking out" for his mom on his own for quite a few years and we are grateful his sister is back in the U.S. and able to pitch in with her brother.

My writing has not been in the forefront lately, needless to say, though Audrey's stroke has served to remind me that we simply do not know how much time we have on this earth - and to be of sound mind and body. That has prompted me to reshuffle, re-prioritize -- in other woods to give myself a much needed good swift kick to get back on track with my writing and also in other areas of my life!

I'm bowing out of some the activities that have sidetracked me from what I feel God desires of me right now. It is never easy to let go, but I am learning and God has been faithful in affirming and assuring me as I grow and learn His ways.

I've researched some contests accepting entries and I will work on that this week. This is a big "contest" time of year, so there are plenty from which to choose. I'm especially considering some pieces I wrote then have just filed away in a general folder on the computer. This morning I re-read one in particular and decided it's time to put it out there:-)

My column at Examiner.com, Richmond Frugal Family is going very well. I've begun posting "Frugal Weekend" activities and several folks have commented they appreciate the ideas. I'm not going to get rich, but I am able to expand my ministry in a way I had been praying about: frugality as a lifestyle.

Whether one is a Christian or not, stewardship is important to ensure a family's welfare and also as a way to preserve our planet's resources. Easy Yoke, Light Burden and Sufficient Grace

Two days after making my last post our lives changed dramatically. On Friday, Sept. 18, my mother-in-law suffered an ischemic stroke. To say we have been on a roller-coaster ride in the past week would be an understatement! We have literally lived at the hospital, and in the past two days at the assisted living facility where she will be staying for some indeterminate length of time. We have been away from her to work, to change clothes and sleep and little more.

Last Friday morning when we got up, we had a long, long, long list of all the very important things we had been putting off and absolutely needed to get done by Sunday in anticipation of the week ahead.

Our family was anticipating with great joy and excitement and reveling in God's blessings upon our lives as we looked to the week ahead: Second wedding anniversary of our beautiful daughter and wonderful son-in-law; my birthday, our son's victorious graduation from Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center, my husband having been offered a full-time job after more than 2 years of working multiple part-time jobs simultaneously while looking for full-time employment. We had planned a marvelous, joyous, yes, perhaps even a bit rowdy, family celebration this weekend!

Since shortly before our daughter's wedding we have been through a refining process. My husband was laid off from his job. I wasn't working full time. We had planned that I would be able to pursue my writing full time. But God decided we needed further refining in order to fulfill His plans for us. That's how we have viewed it. I went back to work--we needed health insurance and a steady, assured minimum income. We offered up to God all of our desires and dreams, all of our hopes and plans, even our very survival. There were days, weeks, months where it was our absolute and complete reliance upon God alone that allowed us to make it at all.

These were not only lean years financially, they were lean in terms of our control over circumstances--very literally we hung by a thread for a long time, hoping, praying, trusting, and ultimately believing without question or hesitation that God held our very lives in the palm of His hand and that he would sustain us. We were ready to accept whatever He planned for us - even losing everything we owned. We knew that He would provide for us what we truly needed and that He would never leave us on our own. And we were okay because we had our family and our faith.

We had learned to rejoice, even in our adversity, lack of financial security, lack of certainty about what the future held. God's grace transformed our lacking by the world's standards into an attitude of abundance only possible through belief in Jesus Christ. And our faith has grown strong and deep roots. And God has refined us and reworked and reshaped and revitalized us. And we have rejoiced that He has considered us worthy of His time and effort.

His yoke became easy and His burden light. Then Audrey had a stroke.

I could write a book about just the past week. Some of it, no one would even believe. Some of it would be just too hard to relive in the writing of it. Some of it, God isn't done using to teach us about yet. But this much we know: All of it is written in God's book of plans for Audrey and for us. He is in it all and He is in control. And we rejoice in that! We are grateful for Jesus' easy yoke and light burden. We continue to rejoice in all the "worse case scenarios" that could have played out that didn't -- not just for Audrey but for us in the past two years -- no, for us in the past 50+ years we have been alive.

One week out: we are grateful beyond expression for God's grace and mercy. We rejoice that He is in control and we are thankful for the prayers and expressions of kindness from friends and strangers regarding Audrey. We don't know the prognosis for Audrey, beyond our assurance that she will one day be in heaven - and hopefully, we will be there too. Until then, we are leaning on God and relying upon His strength, trusting in His mercy, rejoicing in His grace and coveting prayers on her behalf and ours. Oh, and we're going to have that family celebration:-)

"But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed" (1 Peter 4:13 NIV).

Growing, Living and Learning

September is National Coupon Month! Imagine my excitement at discovering this, considering it is also my birthday month AND in light of my newest undertaking as the Richmond Frugal Family Examiner!

In my last post I shared about how I have been striving. Having shared it, and my poem/prayer, I felt some easing of my sense of laboring so hard. God is so very good and He has introduced still more Christian women entrepreneurs and writers into my life, even in just this week and they have encouraged and uplifted me!

I have also had the joy of helping several others with issues in their "non-bloggy", non-writing lives and that is even more a blessing - to be a blessing to another. That's really what life is about.

This week I am working on submissions to several contests and the latest edition of my 2X/month God's Wonder Woman column at Take Root and Write is live. I hope you'll take a few minutes to read part 2 of The Seven Deadly Sins. God continues to reveal to me so much about Himself and His love as I research this topic.

I am learning to view my sin not as something that will prevent me from going to heaven, but rather as a means of growing in grace toward others in my life, myself, and the world at large. I've got a long way to go, but I am learning to view life through a new lens and it is pretty incredible!

Since I'm a bit ahead in posts for Richmond Frugal Family, I'm going to try to finalize two author interviews I've agreed to host here in the near future. Stay tuned! You'll want to know about these two writers!

My All and All

I tend to focus on and ruminate over a word or phrase that comes to mind. A particular term that continues to "visit me" is striving. I had a pretty good idea of the definition, but being a wordsmith and lover of words, I decided to look it up. Here's what I found at dictionary.com:

1.	to exert oneself vigorously; try hard.

2.	to make strenuous efforts toward any goal.

3.	to contend in opposition, battle, or any conflict; compete.

4.	to struggle vigorously, as in opposition or resistance.

5.	to rival; vie.

Ah, yes . . . this is exactly what I thought! It is also exactly what I have been doing lately! I've also noticed lately that many others in my life have had a week or a month, or a year or even a lifetime of striving. And what are we striving for?

I asked myself that question the other day. "What, Mary, is it that is causing you so much struggle? What are you laboring for?" I know Jesus offers us an easy burden and a light yoke. Why is it, then, that I don't lay down MY burdens and take on His?

It is exhausting, this striving. It wears us out and beats us down. It doesn't matter what good or joy there is in our lives. Striving is always in the background, like white noise, if we don't give it over to the One who has already borne our burdens and won us a victory over this world.

Striving is spinning our wheels, believing we are in control, we are in charge, we are the masters of our own destinies. Hard work is a noble thing! Don't get me wrong! I believe in hard work! I believe in 'fighting the good fight' and doing what needs to be done to advance God's kingdom on earth. That's not striving though! Striving leaves out God, because there's isn't any room, or any energy to include one more component of the struggle. Striving is like there's too much friction; going against the grain; swimming against the tide.

Hard work sees the light at the end of the tunnel. Striving can't even see a pin dot of light anywhere on the horizon. Okay, I think I've belabored my point. Over the last several days, this poem has come to me. It is a prayer, really, offering over my striving to the One who lifts us on eagle's wings. I pray the words minister to you as well.

Weekly Writing Wrap Up

I've started a series on the seven deadly sins. I've really learned a lot as I researched and studied more about these particular sins. It's very humbling to realize the true depth and breadth of our sinfulness, especially as it relates to our need to extend grace to others.

My Bio in Rhyme - Can You Rhyme Yours?

One site where I applied for a writing job, the publishers wanted applicants to do a bio in rhyme - 60 words or less. Here's mine:

Wise beyond her years even at the tender age of four,

Now 52, her knowledge is considered ancient lore.

She is creative, compassionate and loving to her core;

Earth mother, sister of the heart, caring friend and more.

A writer and poet who always has the next story in store.

She won’t stop writing till she reaches heaven’s door.

I don't remember the site and I assume I wasn't awarded whatever "gig" it was. I do think it's a fun exercise and if you label yourself a poet . . . well, I'm just saying!

Every Person Has a Story

"Every Picture Tells a Story." I don't know who coined that phrase, but I'm going to take liberties to change it to "Every Person Has a Story." That truth became so evident to me as I "worked the room" yesterday at the Hanover Book Festival!

Most of the authors to whom I spoke were eager to tell me not only about their book(s) but also about themselves. I met young, old, black, white, male, female, "dog people", "horse people", those interested in the paranormal, those who had survived tremendous adversity, some who wrote children's books (most of whom had a light-hearted demeanor). In other words, if there is a "walk of life" I met someone from just about every one of them!

I got my table set up and then I grabbed a handful of my business cards and started around the room. I gave a card to each person to whom I introduced myself and asked them about their book(s) or made a comment that encouraged them to respond. I got their cards, email addresses, story of their book writing, etc. I think you get the picture. I engaged in conversation with a lot of writers yesterday!

Last night I reflected that it was almost like going to the State Fair! There was something there for every taste and style, background and interest. I also thought about how some of the stories just broke my heart. Yes, there were a couple of people who had overcome great tragedy or adversity, there were some to whom God had revealed their "job" was really their "ministry." But every single person had a story to tell, not only with their book, but with their life.

Networking was the name of the game yesterday! It wasn't really about selling books, but rather about making connections. I emailed the names of two authors and two publishers to the co-director of Richmond Christians Who Write for consideration as future speakers to our group.

I also exchanged marketing ideas and experiences with publishers with many of the authors. I shared a table with my dear friend, Tanya Tucker-Blowe. I met Tanya at a Christian Writer's conference in Virginia Beach. Her book title is based on the same scripture as mine, though our titles are different and our writing is different. She has been a gracious and generous encourager and I was thrilled I discovered she lives in Richmond. We have become good friends and sisters in Christ - encouraging and uplififting each other as authors and as friends.

God also revealed to me that I better get busy! Yes, that's right: I've got about 4 more books in me (last year at this time I tentatively would have shared that "maybe" I'll probably write another one in the future!) I know God has put a fire in my heart to get writing! Just do it, Mary! Do it now! Get 'er done!

I look forward to how God will use the people I met yesterday--not only in my own life, but in the world. I've already "friended" all I could find on FaceBook. The others I will email today. I have grown to care deeply for some of my "on-line" friends and I look forward to the relationships that will grow from the Book Festival.

My kids would tell you they're not the least bit surprised that I talked to so many people. They got over their embarassment of my talking to anybody and everybody - anywhere, anytime at a very early age:-) That's what it's all about my friends: connection, relationship, shining your light. Because you never know who is living in darkness, desperately in need of a light to guide them out into the light of Christ.

Where Books Are Sold

RR Bowker reported at the most recent Book Expo where books were sold in 2008. The nonwriter assumes major bookstores carry the elephant's share of book sales, but not so.

23% purchased through online purchase/e-commerce
22% sold through large chains (Barnes & Noble, Borders, Books-a-Million)
22% through a variety of "Other outlets" which includes author
hand-to-hand sales, churches and other organizations, craft
fairs, speakers selling from the back of the auditorium, etc.
10% sold through book clubs
7% through independents
6% through mass merchandisers (Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart)
4% through warehouse clubs (Sam's, Costco, BJs)
2% through supermarket/grocery stores
1% each through discount stores, drug stores, religious bookstores
and book fairs

The first two didn't surprise me. But "other outlets" blew me away. That's sweaty, back-breaking self-promotion. Sales in a hodge-podge of venues can equal the sales in big boy bookstores. I'm blown away.

I've reached some conclusions.

1. Don't tell me a platform can't be lucrative. Don't tell me a
platform isn't absolutely necessary, either.

2. Face-time self-promotion is serious to a successful author.

3. Book fairs don't amount to many sales. Tells me to put more
time investment into online business or speaking.

4. Book clubs merit attention. All this talk about people reading
less doesn't apply here. These clubbers are serious buyers.

5. An online presence is mandatory. You better learn whatever you
don't understand about websites, blogs, social networking and
affiliate programs.

Hope and Healing

Many thanks to Andrea for her rallying prayer warriors from around the world to intercede on our behalf!

Well, 3 days and much stress, worry and concern later, I brought Jim home this afternoon! He spent 13 hours in the ER before the cardiologist released him to a room in the Heart Pavilion. There was only one minor episode on Sunday night where the nurse gave Jim nitroglycerin because he complained of some rather painful pressure in his chest. Since then -- nothing!

Jim has had what one of the technicians at the hospital dubbed "the million dollar workup"!!! In other words, they did just about every logical test they could do without him undergoing any invasive procedures. (We're pretty sure that tech isn't too far off on the cost, either!:-)

The doctors are baffled because every test was negative -- multiple blood work-ups, chest x-ray, echo-cardiogram, ultrasound, stress test, full body scan, upper G.I. & esophageal something - all negative. And yet, on two occasions when he experienced chest pain/pressure, he responded to nitroglycerin.

We tend to believe that the prayers of the faithful led God to heal him. That is our ardent hope and the hope that we cling to. God is so good to have placed so many faithful prayer warriors in our lives -- and around the world! We felt your prayers and love every moment during our ordeal and thank you more than we can ever express.

We do ask for continued prayer that Jim not experience any more episodes like this.

I don't think all of it has really hit me yet, but I am certain in the days and weeks ahead there will be much about which to write and share.

Mary called last night to ask for prayer. Her husband Jim was admitted to the hospital shortly after 3:00 A.M. Saturday morning with a Cardiac Episode. He is stable, now. He will have more tests done on Monday morning.

4th Annual Hanover Book Festival

This will be an exciting day for authors, would-be writers, seasoned writers and families in the area!

Tanya Blowe and I will share a table to sell our respective books. Tanya is an amazing person! She exemplifies entrepreneurship AND generosity of spirit!

We met at a Christian Writer's conference in Virginia Beach about 2 years ago. I bought her poetry book and we began to chat about our respective books. The scripture verse upon which she based her title is the same one I used for my book title! When I found out she lived in Richmond . . . well the rest, as they say, is history.

She's been a mentor and advisor and has become a dear friend. She has become a member of Richmond Christians Who Write so I get to see her more often than previously. I'm thrilled we will be sharing a table at this book festival and will have time to chat and plan and dream together.

You have a real mix of talents in addition to being an author. Will you please tell us about yourself?

I am a stand up comic and speaker with a passion to impart truth and hope to people and to remind them that God is still purposed to have them move into their destiny.

Your new book, Defying Autism, is about your son, James. Will you tell us a little about him?

James is my first born, the apple of my eye. He was born right on time, perfect in every way. He progressed and hit all of the appropriate markers ahead of time. He was one of those vey easy babies that you could pass to anyone and he was still a happy baby. He was pointing and babbling at a year, and into everything!

He sounds adorable! At what point, did you start to notice that something was wrong?

We took James in for his 18-month check up and shots, after which his behavior took a dramatic, turn for the worse. When we brought him home, he would run to the same spot in the hall and stand with his back to the wall and slam his head backwards into the sheetrock. To say this was upsetting was an understatement, but then I thought maybe this is the dreaded terrible twos, or little boys are rough. So we would redirect him and send him on his way. The redirecting stopped working; it was though he could not stop behaving this way. He had many other strange habits, obsessive behaviors that began to appear. He would eat the little pieces of sheetrock, where he had actually put a hole in the sheetrock, he pulled the wallpaper off and ate it, he pulled up the corners of the carpet and ate the foam underneath it, he ate the rubber lining out of our car doors, he watched videos for hours standing in front of the TV.

What did you do? Who did you go to for help?

First we went to other parents of children. I owned a salon so I had the free advice every hour from women who had “already been through it”. I wanted to believe as they all said, that this is a phase, this is the two’s, little boys do strange things. We then went to professionals, pediatricians, speech therapists, ENT specialist, pediatric specialist, state agencies, MHMR and of course our church for lots and lots of prayer.

What can you tell us about autism?

Autism is a severely handicapping disorder that begins at birth or with in the first two and half years of life. For many years autism occurred in 5 out of 10,000 births, however since the early 1990’s the rate is now calculated at 1 in 150 births. Most autistic children are perfectly normal in appearance, but spend their time in disturbing behaviors, which are marked differently from those of normal children. They may stare into space for hours, throw uncontrollable tantrums, show no interest in people including their parents, and pursue strange repetitive activities with no apparent purpose. They have been described as living in a world of their own. Some autistic children have remarkable giftings in certain areas such as music or mathematics, and all need help.

What was your greatest fear?

My greatest fear was losing my child at five or ten years, or as an adult, to an institution. I would watch the movie Rain Main over and over again and assume that would be the best outcome for my son.

What was a typical day like for you and your family?

A typical day for us would be James up before we woke with a video in and grunting for what he wanted. He would only eat a few foods, several times a day he would throw up to let you know he didn’t want or like something.

Crying, tantrums and fits filled the day from sun up to bedtime. His fits had no beginning and sometimes it felt as if there would be no end. In the spring of 2000, when he was almost 6, he was still in a diaper, on a bottle and only spoke 20 words.

Did school help James?

School did help James; he did much better with a strict structured environment. The opposite of that however, is that it is hard to duplicate that environment at home with a family. School helped James academically, but not emotionally or socially.

Did church help James, or you?

Unfortunately, church did not help James at all. My husband and I were music ministers and would fill-in at churches that were looking for a full time staff person. This meant a lot of changes every few months – new locations, new staff, and new strange glares inferring what a bad mother I must be for my baby boy to behave in such a way. Church turned into a place I dreaded and had been such a place of family and belonging before.

What was the turning point for you in this journey?

Having heard the weekly cry of my heart for help for my child, one of my clients recommended a ministry team, a deliverance team, Gospel Revelation Ministries. I didn’t know what deliverance was, but I had no doubt I needed some. I went through personal deliverance and then followed with James in the spring of 2000. I was terrified but they said that God said he was going to be healed, so I stood with their faith. As we brought James into to the room for deliverance, he began to thrash and point to the door to leave, he was ready to go. The team prayed and laid hands on him. They said that the first demonic curse would have to go in Jesus’ name to the dry places. With that, my son reached his hand out and screamed, “come back, come back, come back, come back!!!” He was calling out for the demons that were leaving him. That was the turning point!

So, what was next?

The first thing I did was the most difficult. I changed my mind.

I changed what I believed that God could –and would – do if petitioned. I changed what I thought about the stories in the Bible. I changed my belief in what is available to us, TODAY, by the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.

When I began to be open to the truth of the scriptures, and not just what someone else said I should believe, or someone else’s interpretation of the scriptures for me, then…the Word of God began to truly be a light unto my path.

That was several years ago. How is James today?

James is wonderful! He is 15 years old going in to the 9th grade. He’s six foot tall and an amazing athlete. God’s promise is that he will restore our minds daily and James has caught up with remarkable speed. He is still about 2 ½ years behind academically, and in three resource classes, but is making up lost ground daily. He is completely healed from the oppression of autism.

What do the professionals say?

Doctors say it is something, maybe higher than what they have in the medical field. It is nothing short of a miracle!

What can families hope for who have children with autism?

Families can believe and stand for their loved one’s healing. Jesus is in the miracle working business. He healed James.

James’ story could be anyone’s story. I was not the “good” Christian, but I stood, no matter what, believing for my child’s healing. Your healing may be through diet, environmental changes, behavioral changes, or even the way James was healed. However it comes, do not waver from the promises of God. Exodus 15 says, “I am the Lord your God who heals all of your diseases.” He is Jehovah Rapha, our God who heals. If it is in His name, it is in His will!

When I did a word search at bibleverses.com on “righteous” you can imagine how many hits I got! Psalms and Proverbs alone produced about 10 screens full of bible verses containing the word. In Jeremiah, where I spent a lot of time this morning, God reveals to Jeremiah that He will send His Righteous One to save Israel. I looked up righteous in the dictionary: adj. acting in a just, upright manner; doing what is right; virtuous. Webster’s says to see “right” and “wise” for a more detailed explanation.

Right and wise. Old commandment/new commandment. John is telling his audience that “God’s commandment” has been the same since creation – since Adam and Eve! It is very old, indeed! Yet it becomes new by Christ’s sacrifice. It holds us to a higher level of righteousness. It demands a more rigorous evaluation of our lives, and our actions. It requires a deeper, more committed faith. I think our human nature is to want to be right. But we know that God desires wisdom.

John’s use of “little children,” “young men,” and “fathers” probably refers to readers at various stages in their faith lives. He is telling us that no matter if we were “saved” yesterday or if we have always believed, salvation is ours. But we cannot love this world. We cannot desire its laws and its habits; its standards of right and wrong; its ways and its truth. We are to walk as Christ did—in the truth and in the light of God’s wisdom. John tells us, ”the world passes away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides for ever.”

Our wants and needs will be met by God. Our lives in this world are but a moment in time! So we must not delay. And we must not falter. Begin anew. Choose to be wise over being right, “because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.”

I hope you spend your day walking in the light of God’s wisdom and rejoicing in the righteousness of Jesus Christ.

Writing Challenges and Goals Revisited

Yesterday was an odd kind of day! I was scheduled to deliver the message at an assisted living/retirement community and had planned to act out a "fictitious" woman from the bible who had witnessed the last supper. Oops! Nobody told me they changed the time from 11:00 to 1:45! So much for that, though I learned some interesting things as I researched Passover and read all four accounts of that night in the New Testament.

On the way home from not delivering the message at 11:00 I remembered that one of my friends was scheduled to present at the Richmond Christians Who Write Meeting. Though I had planned not to go so I could spend time with my husband and do some things around the house, I decided to attend the first part of the meeting so I could hear her presentation. God was all over my day! My friend delivered a powerful message about obstacles writers face (I think it ended up being 15) and how to overcome them. It was amazing to hear the scripture she relied upon to overcome each one in her own life!

I had just this past week given myself (yet another!) kick in the pants to get back on track with writing as God desires. I've honestly been spending too much time "diddling" and not enough doing intentional, serious writing. The meeting yesterday gave me the additional push I needed!

Yesterday I submitted 2 poems to one contest and a short story to another contest. I haven't been diligent about submitting for several months and it felt good to get back on track.

I'm reposting my goals and scripture focus that I established and shared in January. The women at Christian Women Take Root sponsored this exercise and I'm glad to have it as a reference. I had this page posted over my computer at some point. Don't know where it is now. . . hmmm . . . The scripture focus is John 16:33 from the Amplified Bible.

My action goals are Pray More, Write More, Be Gentler With Myself, Spend More Time with God. The white blocks adjacent to each 1/4 of the circle contain specific activities that will assist me in accomplishing the goals. (If you would like to do one for yourself, I used Powerpoint to make a "presentation."

One of the things that stands out from my friend's presentation yesterday was her statement that we are ordained by God to write. It's not about us--it's about the Word of God through us. That alone is reason to write! I don't want to get to heaven and have God ask me why I didn't write more of what He told me to write!

My friend also shared that when we are in line with God's desire, He takes care of the details--time, circumstance, creativity, inspiration. All we have to do is obey. I like that!

"Go now, write it on a tablet for them, inscribe it on a scroll, that for the days to come it may be an everlasting witness" (Isaiah 30:8 NIV).

Vanity of Vanities

I was inspired to write this during the sermon at church this morning. The pastor was speaking about grace and how difficult it is for us to comprehend how wonderful God's grace is. The music was especially powerful as well. An altogether grace-filled morning!

Vanity of Vanities

In our striving to understand and
explain we labor in vain.

No deed can earn
No words express
No voice resound
No thought contain

The effort made
The sin forgiven
The hope renewed
The history changed
The night less dark
The day more bright
The hours more precious
The life well lived
The broken bread and wine consumed.

Vanity of vanities that we should even try. Yet labor we each and every day to capture full the grandeur and completeness of the Love of God expressed once for all time by Jesus on the Cross.

I have felt very blessed lately on so many levels. This is one of those subscription bible verse emails I received today. It seemed so fitting as I realize anew each day how much I can depend upon God to meet all my needs.

He is the Master Muse! He is the source of all inspiration, imagination and creativity! Because of Him and His divine plan and purpose for my life am I able to find the time and the energy to write so prolifically! My ardent prayer is that I am accurately and correctly sharing the words He has revealed to me, those He has breathed through me, and those He uses to reach the hearts of my readers.

If you are struggling in your writing, turn it over to Him, the Creator of all thought and word. He is your keeper and He will keep your life from this time forth and for ever more.

God Approved, God Inspired

I updated my goals and current activities lists on the blog just a few minutes ago. I have mixed results on all fronts, but generally am pleased to have had any goals accomplished or in sight of being accomplished lately!

The only, I mean only, thing I want to do is write! Every moment of every day, I want to write! So I've been thinking about how I "don't have time to write" now that . . . I don't need to fill in the blank, because if you're a writer you've probably already done that with your own excuse . . . er . . . I mean reason!

Several days ago I read a quote from Rick Warren's book, The Purpose Driven Life, that a fellow blogger had shared. That book was very literally life-changing for me on so many levels! And yet I am finding I need to be reminded of its contents often in order to stay on track. Warren shared that "there is exactly enough time in each day to do what GOD wants you to do."

I believe that too, so the only one I need to look to when seeking the answer to why I don't have enough time is myself! I'm not beating myself up, but rather giving myself a good switft kick in the pants. For me its about lack of self-discipline but it is also about a lack of leaning on God and seeking His guidance regularly throughout my day. I need to stop more often and seek His direction before I do (or don't do) any particular activity.

I did "tone down" a couple of my goals and plans. I'm not copping out, just being realistic. I didn't know when I created my somewhat ambitious plans that I'd be working full time in 2009! I also had no idea where God would lead me. He's got me on the next leg of my journey and I'm just winding the bend. He doesn't let us rest on our laurels much, does He!

June 14 I'll be delivering the message at a retirement home and they will be expecting a "woman of the bible" when I show up! I have been mulling over two characters and then Sunday as our pastor shared a very powerful message about Miriam (sister of Moses) and four other women in the bible, I got a couple of additional ideas! I guess I better decide on one quickly so I can write the script and rehearse it a few times!

I'll be preaching at my home church in July one Sunday when our pastor will be on vacation. The topic is "Opening Yourself To God." Appropriate topic for me, I believe. I feel honored to be asked in that our home church has several seminary students and others on the path to ordination in residence and each of them are more than competent to preach. Based on what the pastor read in my book, he felt I would be a good one to deliver that part of the series and he indicated several of the church staff concurred.

I made a presentation to Richmond Christians Who Write on "How to Set Up a Blog." I used a PowerPoint presentation and took the group through each screen as it would appear for them, in order. It went very well and I hope several of those who had previously been intimidated or uncertain about setting one up felt it was more manageable than they had originally thought.

God is presenting me with some exciting possibilities for the remainder year! Now that my book is available at amazon.com, I'm going to solicit several area book stores about carrying it in stock -- and doing a booksigning event.

I have selected some previously written articles to submit for pay and am going to work on a writing schedule that fits into my weekly schedule and still affords me to do the other routine things I really need to do daily and weekly.

I Can't Wait For Heaven!

I've been thinking a lot lately about Jesus. I guess that's not surprising to anyone who knows I'm a Christian. Ideally, Christians do/should spend a lot of time thinking about Him!

For some reason though, I've been thinking about the divine/human aspects of Christ and how the fact that were He only one or the other, there would be no story to tell. Or the story wouldn't be nearly as powerful. Yes, Christ was both human and divine.

He was born to a human woman - God's handpicked vessel for entry into our world. I believe too that he was "more" human than divine--at least at first. By that I mean he was probably a precocious, wise and serious child, yet he was still a child - like any other child. I doubt he went through the "terrible twos" or teenage rebellion - did children 2000 years ago have the luxury of exerting their individuality or expressing it as children today seem to?

To me, His humanness is what evokes my gratitude. He had a human will. Even on the Cross, He could have called down the angels to minister to Him--more, to carry him to heaven away from the evil and sin on earth. He chose to suffer as a human man, die as a human man - a terrible, painful, gruesome death.

Jesus set aside His "God-ness" to be like you and me. Just stop and think about that with me for a moment. Have you ever heard of anything so incredible? Can you even imagine it? The creator of the universe, of time and space itself, dared to step down from heaven to walk among us as a human being. It really makes me cry when I fully grasp this truth.

The first question I am going to ask God when I get to heaven is why? Why, God? Why?
I know: he loves us, he wanted us to know how much he loves us. But it is more than that. There is a desire for an intimacy that He doesn't experience any other way, I think. It is with mankind, His most prized and beloved creation that He was willing to expose Himself, to allow Himself to be seen and felt and heard and experienced. And then, as if it were not enough, He died on a cross. And then . . . ! Then . . . ! He sent the Holy Spirit!

I don't know why I'm so filled up with awe and gratitude and wonder and deep, deep aching longing for my God--I began this post several days ago, thinking perhaps if I waited a bit I would know what has prompted this "sentimental" train of thought!

I think sometimes when we stop long enough to really think about it we begin to grasp how incredible is the mystery and truth that God not only thought of us, created us and purposed our lives, He waits for us in Heaven. I have no doubt He has guided, protected, loved and cared for
me every instant of my life upon this earth.

I can't wait to get to heaven so I can kneel at the foot of His holy throne for the rest of eternity.

More Than Many Sparrows

Writers who read this post will understand how one small thing my husband and I observed during our lunch out this afternoon has produced this post - rather longer than I had anticipated!

My husband and I rarely eat out. In fact we almost never eat out. It has become a luxury we can't really justify most of the time. Today, though, we just felt we had earned a treat and set off for a leisurely lunch at a local Mexican grill.

We sat at a table by a back window of the restaurant and in the parking lot near us was a good sized puddle of water hosting five or six sparrows enjoying the sauna-like temperature of the water. As we watched them, one sparrow hopped out and stood on the curb, bill wide open. We assumed he was squawking at another sparrow.

Sure enough another sparrow only slightly larger than the squawker landed right beside it, bill full of bread, and deposited some of the bread into the open bill of the squawking bird! My husband instantly made the comment, "even the sparrows" in reference to the scripture at the end of this post.

We watched the squacker and the other bird interact 5 or 6 more times. My husband joked that perhaps the other bird kept feeding him to make him stop squawking. He seemed to be too similar in size to the others to actually be a baby. We spent about 5 minutes watching the bathing birds and the squawker and his companion.

I know God watches over us with infinite love and care. Sometimes, when we become a bit weary He even intercedes to send us encouragement; a sign that He is control and we need not worry about our lives or the future. Our chosen lunch spot provided us the opportunity to receive God's loving reminder.

Several hours later as I prepared to make this post about "even the sparrows" I thought I should probably make a quick explanation of what the scripture refers to. So, of course, my research ended up being rather extensive and the explanation rather long. In any case, it's worth sharing and there may be readers who did not know about the significance of sparrows in biblical times.

Besides being used for healing of those with leprosy, by the time of Jesus birds were considered a "poor man's sacrifice." Those who could not afford to offer livestock or other expensive animals bought doves or sparrows outside the temple to offer the priest for a sin sacrifice. (These merchants were among the moneychangers against whom Jesus ranted!)

"The LORD said to Moses, "These are the regulations for the diseased person at the time of his ceremonial cleansing, when he is brought to the priest: The priest is to go outside the camp and examine him. If the person has been healed of his infectious skin disease, the priest shall order that two live clean birds and some cedar wood, scarlet yarn and hyssop be brought for the one to be cleansed.

"Then the priest shall order that one of the birds be killed over fresh water in a clay pot. He is then to take the live bird and dip it, together with the cedar wood, the scarlet yarn and the hyssop, into the blood of the bird that was killed over the fresh water. Seven times he shall sprinkle the one to be cleansed of the infectious disease and pronounce him clean. Then he is to release the live bird in the open fields"" (Leviticus 14:1-7 NIV).

The sparrow is among the most plentiful of all birds and where a blood sacrifice was needed for the cleansing of the leper, two sparrows were taken by the priest for that purpose. One was killed and its blood collected in an earthen vessel. Then the live sparrow along with cedar, scarlet and hyssop were dipped in the blood and the bird then set free. This is a beautiful picture of the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Jesus.

Hyssop represents humility in a religious context. It also was used to sprinkle blood on the doorposts and lintels of the Israelites at the Passover in Egypt. Cedar wood was burned as incense in temples; the smoke may have been used as a disinfectant and the resin was used as a preservative. Scarlet in this context probably refers to a band of scarlet wood used to tie the hyssop and cedar together to form a sort of brush that was convenient for sprinkling the blood.

This is the context of these statements from Psalms, Matthew and Luke:

"Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies ? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God" (Luke 12:6 NIV).

"Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young— a place near your altar, O LORD Almighty, my King and my God" Psalm 84:3 NIV).

"So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows (Matthew 10:31 NIV)

We are indeed worth more than many sparrows. Jesus tells us that if God provides for and cares for the tiny sparrow - one of the most numerous among all birds - how much more will he care for us - each made in His image and likeness - designed for a unique purpose on the earth.

We are God's beloved. I thank Him today for the message He sent us through the sparrows.

God's Wonder Woman - Pure of Heart

The latest edition of the Beatitudes for God's Wonder Woman has been pulished at Take Root and Write. This beatitude has proved to be especially challenging for me and I find the timing interesting as I am also joining in the Love Dare at Christian Women Take Root.

Hope Be Undismayed

I just made a blog post at Christian Women Take Root, entitled Hope Be Undismayed.

Yesterday God put on my heart that there was a deep need for hope. It seems that every day the world bombards us with reasons NOT to hope! We must always remember that the One in whom we hope is faithful!

He is the Alpha and Omega God. The God who created hope itself.

Praising God Through Poetry

Yesterday was a remarkable day! Five of us rode up toward Orange, VA for a Christian Writer's conference. We so enjoyed each other's company and really enjoyed meeting so many spirit-filled, intelligent and inspiring Christians!

Two of us were presenters and the other three had the joy of attending various other workshops. We were also blessed with both a children's choir and a men's choir, testimonies, prayer and praise throughout the day. Not to mention a delicious meal after the conference!

Laurie at Supernatural Living lead a session entitled, "From Your Ideas toward God's Goals" that focused on spiritual principles and practical steps to advance your writing for the Lord.

My session was entitled, "Praising God Through Poetry." I focused on ways poets and aspiring poets might share their gift in new and creative ways along with some practical tips and a few words of encouragement.

The other three women enjoyed various sessions that they felt blessed them and spoke to them right where they are. That is so like God!

I also received confirmation of some things I have been praying about in terms of my ministry and its direction and focus. At Crayon Chronicles I've written a three part series, "God's Ready, Set, Go!" This morning I'm moving from "set" to Go!" Much more prayer is needed, but I believe I'm on track with God's plans.

We were exhausted by the time we left for home, but all agreed we were filled to the brim with God's love and blessings! A blessed day all around.
